Melissa Mead: I am pursuing an associate degree in applied science to become a peer recovery coach. DEAR FUTURE KCC STUDENT My name is Melissa and I want to tell you about my experiences as a college student at KCC. The best thing about KCC is everything they have to offer. They offer classes, tutoring, resources to help you in life and in school, clubs, activities, so much more. I wish I would have known when I first started at KCC is everything that I know now. It took me a little while to get the lay of the land, but I got it finally. Time and perseverance my friend. I asked lots of questions and was always met with a helpful response. If someone could not help me then they would get me to someone that could. Do not be afraid to ask questions. One thing I would like to share with you is that self-doubt is one of your biggest obstacles. Always just do your best you got this! I want to encourage you to use everything here at KCC to your advantage. They have a lot to offer, and it is extremely helpful. Enjoy yourself. Take your time but remember to use your time wisely. Page McKee I AM PURSUING MY GENERAL EDUCATION AT KCC TO BE ABLE TO TRANSFER TO A RECREATIONAL THERAPY PROGRAM. DEAR FUTURE KCC STUDENT My name is Paige McKee and I want to tell you about my experiences as a college student at KCC. The best thing about KCC is that the professors and staff at KCC are incredibly supportive and only want the best for you. When I started my college journey this was the most important factor to me, I was worried I wasn’t going to succeed, but KCC has so many support systems to help you. I wish I would have known when I first started at KCC is that the amount of groups, teams, and study help there is unreal. I was worried about going to a community college because I thought that there wasn’t going to be ways to make connections with people, but KCC has really changed my mind. One thing I’d like to share with you is to never be afraid to have a relationship with your professor, if you are struggling in class or even mentally they are great at either helping you or giving you resources that are at KCC to help you. I want to encourage you to always remember that you have a purpose in life and to never feel that you Don’t belong at KCC. The areas that interest me the most are helping people in their life, which is why Rec therapy is my best way to go. I also love working with disabled people!
Sam Bradley: I’M CURRENTLY ATTENDING KCC TO ACHIEVE MY GENERAL ED DEGREE. MY FUTURE PLAN IS TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE GERMAN LANGUAGE. REFLECTION A nice thing that I did not expect to learn about was how to handle one’s stress. I didn’t think this class would be tapping into anything mental. I thought it was just be something that gets people prepped for college life. Learning about stress has helped me understand and identify what is causing my stress in college even though it is obvious for me to know what that is. It usually is homework, a paper, or a test. I’m not usually stressed over classwork or other activities, but it is papers and speeches that stress me out. I’m trying my best to find ways to deal with it and change my outlook on things to also reduce my stress, because I know if I don’t, things won’t go according to plan, and could potentially set me back from the goal I want to achieve. ABOUT ME: I like to do art! I like drawing and sketching. I’m not an expert but I do enjoy it when I get a chance to! SOME of my favorite things ARE Video games, creating and receiving various pieces of art, and traveling!

I wished I would have known when I first started at KCC is that they offer college fairs for those who aren’t sure of where they may want to go next for their education, that way you can learn more about colleges they have transfer pathways with. One thing I’d like to share with you is that KCC offers so many resources, like academics, social, and more, all of which are very good to use whenever needed. I want to encourage you to join a club and make friends. College can be hard and making friends can be very difficult. But having something to spend your time on other than school can really help alleviate some of that hardship. They are always willing to help and trying to get to know you not just as a student, but as a person. I haven’t had a professor who wasn’t willing to help me in the class. They have always been willing to stay after and help or even have me come to their office hours if I need even more help. I wished I would have known more about the campus and everything we have to offer. I started at KCC my junior year of high school through dual enrollment and had no idea where I was going or what KCC had to offer. I wish I would have taken first year seminar sooner than I did. One thing I’d like to share with you is to take first year seminar for your first class or asap. I didn’t and it would have helped me to be a better student sooner. I would also like to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Join clubs and talk to new people. The more people you have in your corner the better. Create study groups for all your classes. It not only expands your thinking about the class but helps you get to know other people. The more people you have the better in my opinion. Aaron Piasecki CAREER: Executive Director — PROGRAM: Business Management EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree — CERTIFICATION NEEDED: Some states require and occupational license to work in this career. REFLECTION One topic that I have changed my mind about is self-talk. I never knew how great the impact was on negative self-talk. What I used to think was if I said something negative then it did not really affect me or what I was doing or thinking. I now know that negative self-talk is 7-8 more believable than thinking something negative. This negative self-talk can lead to depression and anxiety. What I think now is that I should be thinking and talking positively because it has such a big impact on my life. I have changed my thoughts about this topic too. When I wake up now I think, “let’s have a great day”. I used to think, “it’s so early, I don’t want to wake up.” This has made me a lot happier overall and made me more enjoyable to be around. Another thing that I have been saying to myself is when I have to go to school. I used to be super negative about going to school. Now I have a positive outlook on school and life because it makes me a much happier person and people seem to like me more. About Me: I enjoy playing baseball and disc golfing. My favorite things are my family, baseball, and religion. I have two twin sisters, and I love being around them even though they get annoying sometimes!
Athena McCarthy I AM PURSUING AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN AND TRYING TO LEARN THE ESSENTIALS FOR A JOB IN GRAPHIC DESIGN OR ANIMATION. I ALSO WANT TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE ART DIGITALLY. REFLECTION The learning strategy that I realized would be the most useful to me is the strategy of working through problems without having an example as reference. This strategy is especially useful for my math class at KCC as it helps me memorize how to do problems more effectively. This week as I did my online math homework I tried not to look at examples on how to do the problem. In the math homework I have the option to look at how to do similar problems but I challenged myself to do the question and if I got it wrong I could look at how to do the problem. Not immediately looking for how to do the work felt great and I got more questions right as I continued this way. My hope for using this strategy is that it will help me not blank out on how to do something on a test where I won’t have examples to help me. About Me: My main interest is MY ART. I LOVE DRAWING AND MIXED MEDIA PROJECTS
Katie Shupp I AM PURSUING MY ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND INTEND TO TRANSFER TO GET A DEGREE IN CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY. REFLECTION One of the most beneficial things I learned this semester is how to improve my selftalk to make it positive for me. Through this course, I was able to look more in-depth by reading articles about how I can boost my motivation, positive emotions, and learning. It made me realize that positive self-talk and constructive criticism is the best way to motivate myself to feel better about myself and others, complete my assignments, and overall have a nicer attitude. Another skill I learned in this course was my most effective learning strategy. Before this class, I was under the impression that I learned like most of my peers handson. After taking a small assessment, I learned that I am a visual learner. As a visual learner, I can make diagrams, create mental pictures, and rewrite information in order to take in the information in the most permanent way. This information is not only beneficial to know but it will directly affect how I complete my schoolwork and how my grades turn out; if I am able to retain the information in the best way for my brain I will be able to see an increase in my grades. The last lesson that really stuck with me was about implicit bias. Implicit bias is built in everyone’s brain because the human brain is hardwired to make patterns within society based on a person’s demographics and attributes. Everyone has implicit biases whether they believe them to be true or not. About Me: I am interested in criminology, true crime, sports, celebrity culture, and history. My hobbies mainly include watching television shows, playing video games, working , and doing homework

Mackenna Groeneveld: I AM PURSUING MY ASSOCIATES DEGREE AT KCC AND STILL DECIDING ON A CAREER Some of the biggest lessons I learned were more practical things such as the career help in the academic advising office, where the gym was located, and how we can apply for grants in the center for student success. All of which I learned from the campus tours. I also learned a lot about time management and how it must differ from the study habits that we formed in high school. Full-time student, must have at least 30 hours set aside for homework and studying for those classes. This was quite the adjustment for me in some ways but also easier for me than most in others since I was home-schooled. I had to learn the importance of class time and how to interact with other students and different teachers. But I also had a good basis for time management since I did most of my homework and studying on my own anyways. Another thing I learned throughout First Year Seminar was how to recognize stress and anxiety and how to deal with that effectively. I get stressed out very easily because I am fearful of the unknown and I tend to overthink things. But the exercises we did aided me in realizing that no one is perfect and that in college we are all going to fail at times and that I cannot put too much pressure on myself. Overall, FYS taught me where certain places were on campus and how they can help me achieve what I desire at Kellogg Community College. It also taught me how to manage my time well and to the best of my ability and how to recognize my fear, stress, and anxiety, and teach me solutions that could help calm me down. About Me: I love to read, sing, dance and organize! My favorite things are anything to do with Old Disney movies or walt disney world!
Jamee Bussing I AM STUDYING ACCOUNTING. The best thing about KCC is that there are so many different people who are willing to help. I wished I would have known when I first started at KCC is how to better manage my time. I have never been good at it and time management is a skill you need to have in college. One thing I’d like to share with you is do not be afraid to ask questions, I was so nervous my first few weeks of class that I was scared to ask questions and it made it harder for me to complete assignments because of this. I want to encourage you to ask for help. If there is something that you don’t understand or are unsure about, just ask. Someone can help you, and if they don’t have the answer, I’m sure that they will point you in the right direction to get the answer. About Me: I value accountability, perfection, and reliability. I think my goals support my values. I’m striving to do very well in my classes and I am holding myself accountable to continue with school

One thing I’d like to share with you is KCC is best if your planning on transferring to a four year college it would help and save a lot of money. Kenny Nguyen I’M PURSUING COMPUTER STUDIES AT KCC AND PLAN TO TRANSFER TO A UNIVERSITY TO COMPLETE A BACHELORS DEGREE IN AUTOMATION ROBOTICS AND A CAREER AS A ROBOTICS TECH. REFLECTION This class has really helped me out on the things that I at first did not understand at KCC. The tour of KCC was the thing that I really needed because it shows me that I can go to these places when I need something. The journal entries that I did show me things that I have improved over the years. The weekly schedule show me that I should set priorities like learning, and health at first, then entertainment at second. This course also showed me that I can use an effective learning strategy and not be bogged down by homework. This course also showed me to set my SMART goal and used it effectively in real life. But it also showed me that I also have a life too, and it showed me that I need to divide my work and my entertainment equally. This course also showed me that looking early at my career path is also important so that I can gage what do I need for that job. And most importantly my values are the values that are not to be strayed from. Because if I stray from my values then I would not be me. About Me: I enjoy Listening to music, cooking, gaming and some of my favorite things are my siblings and discovering new things.
