Artificial Intelligence

An introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI Literacy.

Artificial Intelligence and Learning

This guide provides general information about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI Literacy resources for students and faculty at Kellogg Community College. Instructors will determine the appropriate use of AI within their courses. Students should consult the syllabus and their instructor if they have questions about using AI in coursework or class activities. The course syllabus will include a statement on the limited or prohibited use of AI within the course for guidance.

Example: AI Use Prohibited

The Bruin Standard identifies three skills every student should develop in their time at Kellogg Community College. Learning effective communication skills, critical thinking skills, and civic and cultural engagement provide KCC students with the necessary tools to succeed in their future academic and career endeavors. Generative AI programs may undermine this learning process. Additionally, since generative AI tools take from existing published materials, without attribution, the use of AI constitutes a violation under Kellogg Community College’s academic integrity policy. Please see the Student Code of Conduct for additional information.

Example: AI Use Limited

Generative AI programs can be used to enhance student learning; however, it is very easy to misuse or to use these programs inappropriately or mistakenly. This class may explore generative AI programs to critically analyze their application and their shortcomings. This examination will be done according to instructor guidelines. All other use of generative AI programs is prohibited and constitutes a violation of Kellogg Community College’s academic integrity policy. Please see the Student Code of Conduct for additional information.

Key Terms

The terms and language used to describe A.I. will continue to change as these technologies develop. A.I. and A.I. Literacy are defined here and a complete directory of Key Terms for AI Governance is manintained by the IAPP.

  • Artificial Intelligence is the theory, development and use of technology that simulates human intelligence and performs complex functions such as learning, reasoning and recognition.
  • A.I. Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, critically evaluate and ethically use AI technologies.
